Carragher admitted he was "a little worried" about Liverpool's new approach in the transfer market this summer. The Reds have been relatively quiet, but as they pursue top target Barcola, the situation is heating up. Liverpool are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over signing Barcola, with the French giants reportedly asking for £145 million.

Carragher does not believe this signing is the right choice. Last month, he pointed out that the 23-year-old was not a full replacement for the departing Salah, and now the Liverpool legend has said that his former club's pursuit of Barcola represents a change in strategy at Anfield. Carragher reminded Liverpool of Manchester United's past troubles, highlighting where they might go wrong.

Carragher said on the Football Ramble podcast: "My favourite thing about Manchester United this summer is that they haven't seemed obsessed with big-name players over the years, and I'm a little worried about my own club too. What we did last summer – and I said it at the time, I didn't actually like it – felt like a Real Madrid-esque summer. Wirtz, Isak, Ekitike, and then spending another £80 million on another striker, even though we already have a £125 million striker. This summer it's all about Barcola."

"I just think, where have the days gone when we built the team under Klopp? Back then we bought players who weren't entirely favored by outsiders, but we found great value. I almost want to go back to that time. I'm talking about Manchester United – this summer they don't seem to be single-mindedly pursuing big names. Santos? Who knows how he'll play out. Tielemans. It's probably the kind of choice where you'd think 'smart, unexpected, a bit different'. The key isn't the name, but whether it fits the team and the club. Manchester United seems to be heading in that direction, and I think that's probably healthy."
