According to The Sun, Paul Scholes believes Eddie Howe could take over at Man United if Michael Carrick experiences a "complete disaster" this season.

Carrick, 45, secured the permanent role as Red Devils manager after leading the team to a third-place finish during his interim spell.

The former Man United midfielder, however, won 12 matches during that period, helping the team secure Champions League qualification, before this season began with a disappointing loss to Hull City.

Despite signing midfielders Youri Tielemans and Noussair Mazraoui in the summer, Man United made few other significant moves. Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's long-term injury had already caused concern among fans even before the Hull defeat.

Moisés Caicedo then joined from Brighton, becoming another midfield addition who could bring creativity to a midfield that was overrun against Hull City.

However, Scholes said it would not be surprising to see Howe take over if results do not improve quickly.

The 48-year-old coach left Newcastle earlier this month following the sale of Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal.

Both Scholes and former teammate Dion Dublin believe that if Thomas Tuchel leaves or is sacked from the England job, Howe would prefer the England national team position, despite his Newcastle contract not expiring until 2028.

Dublin said on "The Good, The Bad, The Football" podcast: "I think England would be his priority over Man United."

"I think they've already earmarked him for the England job."

Scholes agreed, adding: "If Michael really had a complete disaster, it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world, would it?"

He also said: "National team managers are getting younger and younger."

"In the past, when you turned 60, you'd think, 'I can easily take 10 days off a month.'"

Carrick will hope Man United show improvement when they return to Old Trafford to face newly promoted Ipswich Town in front of their home supporters.
