Danny Welbeck scored on his Chelsea debut as Xabi Alonso's side eased into the third round of the EFL Cup with a 2-0 win over a stubborn Luton Town side on Thursday.

Third-tier Luton put up a resolute defensive performance at Stamford Bridge, but Welbeck finally broke their resistance early in the second half, and an unfortunate Hakeem Odoffin own goal made sure of Chelsea's victory.

Having won their first two competitive games under Alonso, Chelsea will now face Leeds United in an all-Premier League tie in round three next month. 

Chelsea set up camp on the edge of Luton's area for practically the entire first half, but none of their 17 shots before the interval beat Josh Keeley in the Hatters' net.

Morgan Rogers went closest to opening the scoring in the first half as he rattled the crossbar in stoppage time, while Estevao also dragged an effort wide when clean through on goal and Reece James drew a fine save out of Keeley following a free-kick routine.

Luton could only hold out for five minutes of the second half, though, as Welbeck met Malo Gusto's right-wing cross with a bullet header to give Keeley no chance.

Welbeck passed up a decent chance for his brace soon afterwards, following a deft through-ball from Palmer, who later clipped the top of the crossbar with a dipping effort from 20 yards out.

The Hatter's slim hopes of a fightback were dashed in the 79th minute, as Odoffin sliced Estevao's cross-shot – which appeared to be drifting wide – into the roof of his own net, and Chelsea went close to adding further gloss on two occasions in stoppage time, with Keeley denying Palmer and substitute Jamie Gittens hitting the base of the post. 

Big-name attackers help Chelsea avoid upset

Only 72 hours on from Chelsea's season-opening victory over Fulham, Alonso resisted the urge to make wholesale changes, only making five alterations and sticking with big names like Palmer, Rogers and James.

Alonso did hand full debuts to Mike Penders, Pep Chavarria, Valentin Barco and Welbeck, and the latter marked his first appearance in Chelsea blue with a goal.

Welbeck led the line well for 73 minutes before being replaced by Joao Pedro, attempting four shots – all of which came from inside the box – and hitting the target with two. 

But the star performers were Palmer and Estevao, playing either side of Welbeck. They created five chances apiece, with Estevao contesting a remarkable 17 duels – at least eight more than any other player on the pitch. He won nine of those, including four successful dribbles out of five attempted.

Chelsea have now progressed from each of their last 20 EFL Cup ties against teams from outside the top flight, dating back to a penalty shoot-out loss to Burnley in 2008.
