According to Yahoo Japan, the 2026-2027 Bundesliga season will kick off on August 28th, with Bayern and Stuttgart playing in the opening match. A total of 14 Japanese players will compete in the Bundesliga at the start of the new season, the most among Europe’s top five leagues.

Following the 2026 North American World Cup, these players will continue to pursue their ambitions on the world's biggest stage, with their sights set on the 2030 World Cup. This season, four additional Japanese players have arrived in Germany to compete for honours in the Bundesliga.

Bayern, the dominant force with 14 titles in the past 15 seasons, is hoping for the recovery of Japanese international Hiroki Ito, who has been plagued by injuries. Ito made only 16 league appearances last season. In his third year with the club, he aims to start the season healthy and reclaim his starting spot.

Mainz's Kaisei Sano has been a regular starter over the past two seasons. He also scored a crucial opening goal in the knockout stage of the North American World Cup against Brazil. His Mainz teammate Hayate Kawabe will work alongside him to help the team climb the standings.

Ritsu Doan of Eintracht Frankfurt made an impact in his debut season, appearing in 31 matches and scoring five goals. The club also expects contributions from 20-year-old defender Keita Kosugi. Ko Itakura of Borussia Mönchengladbach returns to the Bundesliga after a two-year absence. He will play for the club alongside Shuto Machino. The additions of Daiki Hashioka and Zento Uno this season bring Borussia Mönchengladbach's Japanese contingent to four players.

Freiburg already has Yuto Suzuki in its squad and will welcome Keisuke Goto and Rihito Yamamoto for the new season. Hoffenheim's Koki Machida is aiming to recover from injury and return to the national team. Newly promoted Schalke 04 has signed Satoru Tanaka, hoping he can help the side avoid relegation.

It is increasingly common to see Japanese players thriving in the Bundesliga. As these continually developing talents grow further, the new season promises to be worth following.
