On August 30, Eredivisie giants Ajax officially announced that the club had reached an agreement with Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat. The defensive midfielder officially joined Ajax, with both parties signing a contract valid until June 30, 2028.

Amrabat joined as a free agent. Before officially moving to Ajax, he had agreed with his former club Fenerbahçe to terminate his existing contract early. Once the contract was dissolved, he was able to move to Amsterdam as a free agent.
Amrabat was born on August 21, 1996, making him 27 years old, and was born in Heemskerk, Netherlands. He began his professional career at Dutch club FC Utrecht and later played for Feyenoord. After leaving the Netherlands, he played in the Belgian, Italian, English, and Turkish leagues, accumulating rich career experience.
Specifically, Amrabat has played for clubs including Club Brugge, Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, Manchester United, and Fenerbahçe. Last season, he also appeared for La Liga side Real Betis on loan. With many years of experience in major European leagues, Amrabat has accumulated considerable competitive experience at the highest level.
At the national team level, Amrabat has long been an important member of the Moroccan national team. He recently represented Morocco at his third FIFA World Cup. As an experienced defensive midfielder, he plays a crucial role in midfield interception, organization, and transitions between defense and attack for both his national team and club.
Jordi Cruyff, Director of Football Affairs at Ajax, expressed enthusiasm about this signing. He stated that the club was very pleased to have successfully recruited Amrabat.
Jordi Cruyff said: "We are very happy to sign Sofyan. He possesses excellent physical qualities, strong technical abilities, and rich international experience. Furthermore, he is very familiar with the Dutch league, so we believe he will adapt to the team quickly."
Ajax stated that the acquisition of Amrabat serves a clear purpose. As a defensive midfielder, Amrabat possesses strong tackling and defensive coverage abilities in midfield, as well as solid passing and organizational skills. His extensive experience in top European leagues will bring valuable expertise to Ajax's relatively young squad.
It is worth noting that Amrabat is no stranger to Dutch football. He began his professional career in the Dutch league, gaining experience at clubs such as Utrecht and Feyenoord. Therefore, compared to foreign players without Dutch league experience, he should theoretically adapt faster to the pace and environment of the Eredivisie upon his return.
For Ajax, this signing represents a meaningful reinforcement. The team needs experienced players in the squad to compete in domestic and European competitions. Amrabat has played in top European leagues for many years and participated in major international tournaments such as the World Cup. His addition is expected to enhance the team's midfield resilience and overall experience.
The contract Amrabat signed with Ajax runs until June 30, 2028, indicating that the club views him not merely as a short-term solution but as an important part of the squad for the coming seasons.
For Amrabat, returning to the Netherlands represents a significant turning point in his career. After playing for Club Brugge, Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, Manchester United, Fenerbahçe, and Real Betis, the Moroccan midfielder is returning to the Dutch football environment where he began his professional career.
