Chinese state media criticized Real Madrid after the club posted a message on social media mourning flood victims in Nepal and Gyirong county in southwestern China, calling the statement's treatment of Tibet and Nepal as equivalent "inaccurate."

On Tuesday, Real Madrid posted a message on its official social media account commemorating a moment of silence held at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium before a weekend match against Málaga, stating it was "to remember the victims of the terrible floods in Nepal and Tibet."

Following this post, Chinese media widely criticized the club, arguing that Real Madrid had equated Tibet with the independent nation of Nepal. The issue quickly became a trending topic on Weibo, China's blocked social media platform.

The English-language edition of Global Times published an article stating that the wording "essentially encouraged fabricated separatist rhetoric" and criticized Real Madrid's message as "inaccurate."

The outlet argued that by mentioning Tibet and Nepal in the same message, Real Madrid had equated the two, and called for the use of official Chinese names, such as the Chinese pinyin "Xizang" or "Tibet, China."

A hashtag initiated by the official Beijing Daily media outlet on Weibo, titled "Real Madrid lists Tibet and Nepal together and refuses to correct it," attracted participation from over 20 media outlets and became the 11th trending topic on the platform within hours.

The August 26 floods originated from a glacier collapse in Nepal, sending large amounts of ice, rock, and debris into Gyirong and destroying a border crossing between Nepal and Tibet. According to the latest figures compiled separately by Nepal and China, the disaster claimed over 1,000 lives and left more than 4,000 people missing.
