According to the Daily Mail, Ramsdale joined Southampton in 2024 following their promotion, with a transfer fee of up to £25 million from Arsenal. However, he has yet to make a single matchday squad this season and has proactively requested to play in youth team matches. He is now fourth choice at the Championship club.

Daniel Peretz, who joined on loan from Bayern Munich last January and made a permanent move this summer for approximately £6 million, has performed exceptionally well and is now Southampton's number one goalkeeper—a fact the manager has made clear to Ramsdale. George Long, who was on loan at Newcastle last season and joined permanently in June, has also been informed he is Peretz's second-choice competitor.

Southampton has also followed the recent trend of signing an experienced older goalkeeper to mentor younger players, with 37-year-old Jamie Jones now ahead of Ramsdale in the pecking order.
