According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Arsenal are close to reaching a full agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of midfielder Guimaraes.

The Athletic reported on July 8 that Guimaraes had informed Newcastle United that he wished to leave and join Arsenal. Arsenal initially expressed willingness to pay up to £60 million for him, approximately €70 million or $80.2 million.
Previously, Arsenal had made a verbal offer to Newcastle United for an amount less than £60 million, but it was rejected. Newcastle United insisted at the time that they would not consider offers for the midfielder.
However, all parties are now keen to resolve the situation as soon as possible, and the deal is progressing towards completion. Guimaraes is awaiting permission to undergo a medical and finalize his move to North London.
Guimaraes is currently with his Newcastle United teammates at the team's pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain.
The 28-year-old has two years remaining on his contract with Newcastle United, having signed a five-year deal in October 2023. That contract included a temporary £100 million release clause, but it expired in June 2024 without being triggered.
Guimaraes' departure would be another major personnel loss for Newcastle United this summer. Eddie Howe has already stepped down as head coach, and Matthias Jaissle of Al-Ahli will replace him.
Newcastle United sold winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for €80 million and midfielder Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth a total of £100 million. They also missed out on Manzambi from Freiburg, who ultimately joined Aston Villa.

Newcastle United have signed 18-year-old midfielder Steur from Ajax for approximately €25 million, and 20-year-old midfielder Alagi Bamba from Monaco in a deal that could be worth up to €40 million.
Newcastle United also made an offer of approximately £46 million to Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Lucas Bergvall, but it was rejected. Nottingham Forest is also pursuing the player.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle United from Lyon in January 2022 for a total of €50 million including add-ons. He has played 153 Premier League games for Newcastle United, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists, and was part of the team that won the League Cup in 2025.
Last season, Guimaraes made 41 appearances in all competitions, contributing 9 goals and 8 assists. Guimaraes started all 5 of Brazil's matches at the 2026 World Cup, providing 4 assists.
