Carragher believes Liverpool's summer 2025 transfer window could potentially be "the worst" in Premier League history.

After Slot led the club to the league title in his first season, Liverpool spent a total of £450 million to sign seven players, including £125 million for Isak and up to £116 million for Wirtz.

However, aside from Ekitike, none of the other new signings have performed well in their first season at Liverpool. Liverpool ultimately finished in fifth place, and Slot was sacked.

After players like Isak and Wirtz underperformed in Newcastle's 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, Carragher delivered a scathing assessment of Liverpool's transfer business from last summer.

He said: "It's only the first game of the season, but I'm concerned that the transfer window 12 months ago could set Liverpool back one or two years, and it will take time to fix these issues."

"Yes, it's only one game under Iraola, but aside from Ekitike, we're talking about 12 months of poor performances from these players."

"If things don't change in the next two or three months under Iraola, and these players don't improve, then considering their transfer fees and the impact this will have on Liverpool, I think we could look back on this transfer window as possibly the worst in Premier League history—possibly the worst we've ever seen."

Carragher said: "The goal of signing these players wasn't just for them to be good players, but the hope was that they would build a dynasty for Liverpool."

"Don't forget, Liverpool won the league two years ago. These players were supposed to win two or three league titles over five years, like Manchester City has done in recent years, or like Manchester United used to do."

Carragher was particularly critical of Wirtz. He said: "The idea that a player needs a year to adapt to the Premier League, I think that's a bit of a myth. I can't think of many examples where players genuinely need that long to settle in."

He added: "I don't think Wirtz has underperformed expectations. I think his performances over the past year are perhaps his true level—he's a solid, reliable player."

"He shouldn't have cost £110 million; a more realistic valuation would probably be £50-60 million, around that range. He plays solidly and reliably, and his touch is excellent. I'm not sure exactly what people expected from him."
