Mason Greenwood's manager at Fenerbahce resigned hours after a decision on the Manchester United academy graduate ahead of their first Champions League match for 18 years

Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal announced his resignation during a press conference after their 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League. His fourth stint in charge of the Turkish giants ends days after reports that he was giving consideration to playing Mason Greenwood as a second forward.

Marco Asenio's lack of fitness and Matteo Guendouzi being suspended forced Kartal to think outside of the box. However, he ultimately decided against moving the Manchester United academy graduate from the right wing.

Greenwood, 24, assisted their equalising goal, which Archie Brown scored. However, the hosts were ultimately unable to find a winner.

In his press conference, Kartal said: "As of this evening, I would like to congratulate my players and announce my resignation from my post." He continued: "I have taken this decision to pave the way for my club.

"I have resigned from my post while there is still time, to assist my beloved Fenerbahce, my players and future managers. I wish everyone a good evening, on the understanding that I shall never return."

This resignation marks the end of his fourth spell in charge of the Turkish giants. He also spent a decade playing for them, winning the league twice.

The former defender worked in Fenerbahce's academy for two years after retiring before beginning his managerial career elsewhere. Kartal returned as their assistant coach nine years later, winning two more titles and a pair of Turkish Cups.

After four years in that role, he took over as manager after the incumbent resigned. However, it took just a season before he decided to leave himself after finishing second to Galatasaray and being beaten by Buraspor in the cup semi-finals.

Kartal returned seven years later, replacing the future Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Vitor Pereira. He again led Fenerbahce to second place.

Even after ending the season on a 14-match unbeaten streak, they appointed Jorge Jesus instead of Kartal that summer. Fenerbahce returned to him a season later after the Portuguese coach's departure.

Kartal delivered a 99-point season; however, Galatasaray managed 102 to win the league, and he left. Then, two years later, Fenerbahce turned to him once again this summer.

However, despite coming through three rounds of Champions League qualifying to reach the tournament proper for the first time in 18 years, they lost their opening league match to Genclerbirligi, were beaten by Besiktas, and fell four points behind leaders Galatasaray.
