Sesko received only 23 minutes in the Manchester derby. Owen backed Carrick's decision to limit Manchester United striker Sesko's playing time, saying the forward "is not in the top ten in the world yet."

Owen said: "Manchester United have many different attacking options, which is a good thing for the club. I think Sesko as a player still needs to grow to truly fulfill his potential. Manchester United obviously want to become the strongest team in England again and win the Premier League. To do that, I think they need a world-class striker.

"Is Sesko one of the top 10 strikers in the world? No, I don't think so.

"How can we develop him to that level? Maybe by giving him more playing time and experience. That could be the approach.

"But as things stand, if you asked me to pick the team yesterday, I would make exactly the same decision as Carrick. I don't think he'll lose sleep over it.

"I think Sesko is a good super-sub. If one of the other strikers gets injured and he starts, I have no problem with that. He has scored goals whether he starts or comes off the bench.

"He's a useful player in the squad, but I don't think the fact that he didn't score in this game warrants such strong demands for him to play. They scored 5 goals against Ipswich not long ago."
