After the World Cup, Aguirre received invitations from several clubs and national teams, including Ecuador and South Korea. Ecuador ultimately chose Marcelo Gallardo. After the exhausting experience of leading Mexico in the World Cup for the third time, Aguirre had previously decided to take a temporary break.
