Before the start of the new Premier League season, former Liverpool German star Hamann discussed Wirtz in an interview.

Hamann told Tribal Football that he is most looking forward to Wirtz's breakout season: "The player I want to see shine is Wirtz. If Liverpool want to do well in the Champions League or the Premier League, they have to get the best out of him. For some reason, Slot didn't manage to do that last season. I just hope this time, he can show his ability from the start of the season."

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Leverkusen last summer for a transfer fee of 125 million euros, but he quickly drew criticism due to his failure to adapt quickly to the Premier League. It wasn't until the 18th round against Wolves that Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal. Last season, he made 49 appearances in all competitions, contributing 7 goals.

Hamann believes that the new season is crucial for Wirtz: "If he doesn't have a good start, then by the first international break in mid-September at the latest, people will start to question whether he joined the right team for him. When a top player, or one of the team's most important players, costs so much but fails to prove himself, people naturally raise more questions."

Hamann further emphasized: "So, this is an extremely important season for Wirtz, but he must get into form quickly. If he doesn't start well, the discussion about Wirtz could quickly heat up."

Wirtz's contract with Liverpool runs until 2030. The new manager, Iraola, who replaced Slot, has already made it clear: "We know what he can bring to the team."
