After Manchester United's 0-2 away defeat to Hull City in the opening match of the new Premier League season, Man Utd left-back Luke Shaw spoke to Viaplay.

Luke, if I said you lacked intensity in the first half, would you accept that?
No, to be honest, I wouldn't accept that. I thought we had intensity. I don't think they surprised us, but clearly we conceded two goals from set pieces early on. Especially when we knew their set pieces were very good, and of course, their ability to attack down the wings and put balls into the box. I think overall, we need to do better.
I felt that even before the match, before the ball rolled, we needed to prepare better for their strengths, including set pieces, of course. But there's no doubt about it, that was very disappointing. As I said, Man Utd should have come here and won, but we didn't. There's no excuse for it. Fair play to them, and we'll bounce back, regroup, refocus, and have another important match next week at Old Trafford.
That's fair. When you say Man Utd should have come here and won, you must know they'll play with great intensity and passion, and the same with set pieces, and you prepared for that. Is the biggest disappointment now that you couldn't handle that intensity?
Very disappointing. As you said, we knew what we were up against. The first match for a newly promoted side back in the Premier League, they're sure to be full of passion and hunger, and the atmosphere will be fantastic. In the dressing room before the match, we were ready. We felt well-prepared, everyone was positive, and the team felt in very good shape. Then, of course, two goals from set pieces felt like a punch to the gut. It disrupted our momentum. But at half-time, I still felt we could come back and win. Of course, we believed in ourselves. But today we lacked something in the final third and weren't clinical enough in converting chances into goals. But, as I said, there's no excuse.
In a way though, it's better this happens now, isn't it? The season's just started anyway, we can regroup, make adjustments, and get back to it next week.
Everyone talked about the "Carrick effect" before, and at the end of last season, there were no signs you'd come here and lose this match. I know it's a tough question to answer after opening day defeat, but what would you say to Man Utd fans who have high expectations for the new season?
Of course, I think we have the same expectations as the fans. We feel that way, and not just after this defeat, I still believe this will be a very good season for us. I'm confident we'll be at the top of the competition. Of course, this is just one setback. Obviously it's not ideal when this happens early in the season with high expectations. We should have started the new season strong and shown everyone that we'll make a difference this season. But that didn't happen today. However, one match doesn't define us. We'll regroup and start again. As I said, I promise you, this will be a great season for us.
