Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde and are considering a move before the transfer deadline, sources told ESPN.

Manchester United are looking for a new left-back and had inquired about Newcastle's Lewis Hall earlier this summer. While the club has played down the possibility of signing Balde, Barcelona are aware of United's interest.

The 22-year-old was not in the Barcelona squad for Sunday's 5-0 win over Elche. Head coach Hansi Flick explained that he told the Spain international it was best to "clear his head" amid growing transfer speculation.

Sources told ESPN that Flick wants to speak with Balde face-to-face before deciding his future. Balde is seeking assurances about his playing time this season, with Joao Cancelo and Xavi Hernández both capable of playing in the same position.

If Balde is allowed to leave and is open to a move to Old Trafford, Manchester United would prefer to negotiate a season-long loan deal with an option to buy. Barcelona value the Spain international at between €30 million (£26m/$35m) and €40 million (£34m/$47m).

Sources told ESPN that Manchester United are interested in signing a new left-back due to concerns that Luke Shaw cannot sustain the intensity of playing three games a week during the Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

Shaw started every league game last season, but the 31-year-old has been hampered by injuries in the past.
