Sunderland have added defender Kevin Danso to their squad ahead of the summer transfer window closing on Tuesday.

Sunderland have added defender Kevin Danso to their squad ahead of the summer transfer window closing on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Austrian joins on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

A commanding centre-back, Danso has won hearts throughout his career, with his committed performances.

A fearless, dominant defender, Danso will add strength, power and combativeness to the Mackems’ defensive options.

He featured in all four of Austria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 fixtures – and has made 36 appearances in total for his country.

Sunderland AFC Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi, who worked with Danso during their time at RC Lens, is delighted to welcome the experienced defender to the Stadium of Light.

“Kevin is a player I know very well from my time working with him at RC Lens,” he said.

“He will bring strength, character and know-how to the squad, and vast experience of playing in domestic and European competitions.

“We’re thrilled to add him to the squad for a historic season in Sunderland AFC’s history.”

Born in Austria to Ghanaian parents, he came through the ranks at MK Dons, before heading back to the continent to join German side FC Augsburg in 2014.

He would go on to make 44 appearances in total for Augsburg, his association with the club lasting seven and a half years, punctuated with loans out to Southampton and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The summer of 2021 brought a permanent transfer to RC Lens, for whom he would appear 128 times, before joining Tottenham Hotspur, initially on loan in the 2025 January window, before making the move permanent.

He joins Sunderland on loan having made 52 appearances in total for Spurs.

Danso, who will wear the number 4 shirt, said: “I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“I know Florent well from our time together at Lens, so that was an important factor in my decision. I’m looking forward to working with him again, meeting my new team-mates and experiencing the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light.”
