This choice was reportedly influenced by agent commissions and payments to those around him, with his uncle allegedly receiving €500,000 from the deal. Dugarry accused: "The outrageous behavior clearly comes from the family. It's disgraceful and unimaginable. Your first conversation with a player should be: Where do you want to go? The player's wishes are paramount."

The former French forward also believes that Malick Fofana, being introverted, might have lacked the assertiveness to stand firm on his choices against those around him.
