Luka Vuskovic denied Leeds United their maiden victory at the Amex Stadium as Brighton and Hove Albion fought back to earn a 1-1 draw in the Premier League. 

Jayden Bogle handed the Whites a deserved lead after 15 minutes, turning home Ao Tanaka’s low centre to score Leeds’ first goal at the Amex in 14 years. 

In fact, Leeds had signalled their intent inside the opening two minutes itself when Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke in behind the Brighton defence and fired wide, although he was subsequently flagged offside. 

Daniel Farke’s side enjoyed a dominant opening spell from there and saw plenty of chances to extend their advantage, with Calvert-Lewin seeing a near-certain goal cleared off the line by Lewis Dunk, before a fierce Tanaka volley clipped the crossbar after leaving Verbruggen rooted to the spot. 

Tanaka believed he had finally given the visitors some breathing room five minutes after the restart with a clever near-post finish off a neat set-piece routine, only to see his effort chalked off for offside following a VAR review. 

That profligacy eventually proved costly as Brighton began to wrestle back control with some chances of their own.  

Pascal Gross curled narrowly beyond the far post as the hosts grew in confidence, and a full response arrived in the 71st minute when Vuskovic rose unmarked to meet Maxim De Cuyper’s corner and steer his header beyond James Trafford. 

Both sides had chances to win it during a frantic finale as Yasin Ayari forced Trafford into a sharp save before Gross was presented with a golden opportunity inside the area but could somehow only manage to blaze over from inches away. 

Lukas Nmecha similarly spurned a good chance in the dying minutes, drilling wide seconds after Gross’ miscue as both sides settled for a point. 

Leeds made to pay 

Farke will certainly rue his side’s lack of composure in front of goal after Leeds failed to maintain their first-half dominance following the restart. 

Leeds arrived knowing exactly how monumental a win could be, with the Whites never having taken three points from a visit to the Amex in 10 attempts (D3 L7). 

And they made a blistering start, amassing 2.12 expected goals (xG) after just 25 minutes – already more than their combined total across their opening two Premier League matches of the season (1.93). 

Their 2.12 xG at half-time was also the most by an away side in the first half of a Premier League game against Brighton since Manchester City produced 2.66 xG in October 2021. 

Bogle’s opener, which set the tone, marked the Whites’ first away goal against the Seagulls since November 2012, ending a dry run of 759 minutes across eight matches without finding the net. 

But Leeds were unable to make their superiority count, allowing Vuskovic to rescue a deserved point for Brighton. Since the start of last season, the Croatian has scored seven goals – more than any other centre-back across Europe’s top five leagues. 

And Brighton’s fightback continued a familiar trend under Fabian Hurzeler. Since he took charge ahead of the 2024-25 season, only Aston Villa (41, prior to the Hull game) have won more Premier League points from losing positions than the Seagulls (39).
