Erling Haaland aimed a lighthearted dig at new Man City team-mate Ayyoub Bouaddi after Enzo Maresca's side beat Porto in their Champions League opener.

City won 2-0 at the Estadio do Dragao thanks to a second-half brace from Haaland in another positive result for their new-look team following a busy summer.

Along with Haaland, who was named as the Player of the Match, Bouaddi impressed on his first start for the club since his £85.7million move from Lille.

And when asked by Prime Video for his thoughts on his new team-mate's performance, Haaland was full of praise for the 18-year-old.

'I think he did a really, really good game,' he said. 'The last couple of weeks in training... I just told the chairman (Khaldoon Al Mubarak) he's been amazing in training and everything, so I think we've got a gem there.'

Haaland then joked: 'To be honest, I think he should have played me in, in the second half.

'I was all alone, so I was a bit angry. I will tell him right now, but he played a good game, except for that pass.'

Haaland smirked as he finished that sentence, before he was pressed on whether his new boss Maresca would be happy with his side's performance and where they could improve.

'We have to learn,' Haaland added. 'Enzo has to demand a lot from us. We have to demand a lot from each other.

'We have to win games because in Man City you have to win games, you have to win trophies. That's what we have to do with this club.

'I hope (he will be pleased). We won away in a difficult game. Look at this atmosphere, it was unreal at times, so I hope he is happy.'

Maresca, who was an assistant coach to Pep Guardiola during City's Treble-winning season, has now won four of his first five games in the hotseat since replacing his former boss.

And, when pressed after the game, he shared similar thoughts on Bouaddi's impressive display.

'Oh my God! Bouaddi was very good,’ Maresca said. ‘Against Coventry he lost two balls and after that he was inside our box, calm.

'This shows how good he is because any player, after you miss two passes, can panic.

‘You don’t expect it a guy who’s 18 to manage this game and he was top. I didn’t see him in any moment panic. This is the reason why he is here with us.’

City return to action on Sunday when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the first Manchester derby of the season.
