Daniel Maldini, son of Italian legend Paolo, has reportedly had his driving licence suspended after allegedly failing a breathalyser test following a car crash in Milan.

Maldini, 24, was involved in the incident just hours after he scored the winning goal for Cagliari on Saturday night as they beat Atalanta 2-1.

The attacking midfielder collided with another vehicle while driving his Porsche Carrera at around 5:15am on Sunday morning.

Maldini was among six people to suffer minor injuries and he was taken to Milan's Fatebenefratelli Hospital for precautionary tests before being released.

Milan City Police confirmed to BBC Sport that Maldini was involved in a road traffic accident and revealed the news about the breathalyser.

In a statement, they said: 'Mr Maldini was administered a breathalyser test at the scene' and his 'driving licence was confiscated following a positive result.'

Reports in Italy said Maldini's initial test at the scene recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.91 grams per litre, before a second reading came in at 0.89 grams per litre.

Those figures are both higher than Italy's legal limit of 0.5 grams per litre.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport also reported that Maldini failed a preliminary drugs test following the accident, although they added that those results needed to be confirmed through further toxicological tests in hospital.

However, Maldini and Cagliari vehemently denied this, with the Serie A side releasing a statement on Monday defending their player in relation to the drug accusations.

They said: 'Cagliari Calcio announces that, following reports that emerged in the Italian media in recent hours, Daniel Maldini underwent toxicology tests.

'All tests carried out returned negative results. The player will regularly join the squad this afternoon as the team resumes training ahead of their upcoming fixture.'

Maldini also took to Instagram to share the results of the toxicology tests conducted after the accident.

He posted a screenshot demonstrating that he tested negative for several substances in an attempt to publicly clarify the situation.

The incident came soon after Maldini, who has previously represented multiple clubs including AC Milan, Monza and Lazio, enjoyed a memorable evening on Saturday.

Not only did he score the winner from the spot, but ironically the attacking midfielder is on loan from Atalanta after being deemed surplus to requirements by his parent club.

It was Maldini's second goal in just four league games this season, with Cagliari currently in fourth place in Serie A following an extremely positive start.

Maldini's father Paolo is widely regarded as one of Italy's greatest footballers of all-time during a career where he represented just AC Milan and Italy.

His late grandfather Cesare also earned legendary status at the San Siro before enjoying a managerial career that included stints with his former club and his country.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old previously came through the ranks at AC Milan during a period when his dad served as the club's technical director.

Maldini left in 2024 in search of more regular first team football, spending a year with Monza before he moved to Atalanta.

He has also won six caps for Italy, and could be back in action on Saturday when Cagliari travel to Udinese.
