In the opening match of the FIFA World Cup against Mexico, South African midfielder Zwane was shown a red card by the referee late in the second half.

Zwane committed an act of violence against an opponent during an attack, an action that was intervened by VAR and brought to the attention of referee Wilton Sampaio, who showed Zwane a red card after reviewing the replay.
South African midfielder Yaya Sithole had already been sent off with a red card shortly after the start of the second half, making this the second time in the FIFA World Cup that two red cards have been issued in a single opening match. The last time was in 1990, when Cameroon's Kana-Biyik and Massing were both sent off in a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
