Hato said in an interview in Hong Kong that he was looking forward to making a difference under Alonso in the new season.

At approximately 02:00 UTC (CEST), the team hotel lounge was bustling. The sound of table tennis balls hitting the table echoed through the room as Marcos Palestra played PlayStation and chatted happily with his teammates.

Soon after, Hato walked in and approached the table to say hello. He was there to discuss life on tour and his goals for the new season.

What was originally scheduled to be a "quick 5-minute chat" turned into an in-depth 15-minute conversation. Hato was determined to make an impression under Alonso this season.

The Dutch player believes his versatility will work to his advantage. Hato has played as a center-back, left-back, wing-back, and has also tucked into midfield during his time at Chelsea. Alonso's tactical flexibility throughout his coaching career makes the number 21 player believe he can be a useful piece of the puzzle for the Spanish coach.

After joining Chelsea from Ajax in the summer of 2025, Hato took some time to adjust to his new environment, but he received consistent playing time in the second half of last season and hopes to continue that this season.

As a table tennis ball flew past Josh Achampong and landed at our feet, Hato explained that he had no regrets about his first season at Stamford Bridge. João Pedro raised his hand in apology, and Hato hit the ball back into place.

The Dutch player, keeping an eye on the table tennis table a few yards away, said: "I'm very happy at Chelsea. Although I didn't play much at the start of the season, I never regretted it. I knew joining Chelsea was the right decision."

"I get along very well with the people here and my teammates. I'm looking forward to what lies ahead. During my time here, the team has had several coaches, but under Alonso, I feel we have an excellent coach and a good chance to compete for trophies.

"Of course, it's too early to say, but I have confidence and belief in this team that we can do something special this season."

Hato has impressed in pre-season, playing both as a left-back and a left-sided center-back.

He is willing to play wherever needed and believes he can be an asset to Alonso, regardless of the team's formation.

The Dutch international added: "I think this will definitely help. We know the coach is very flexible in his thinking, and as a team, we are too. Whether we play with a back four or a back three, I have a role to play because I can play center-back and left-back."

"I've also played in midfield, and I like to tuck in and get involved in the play, so I think I can offer the coach a good option."

"But for me, it doesn't really matter. I'm happy to play whenever the team needs me. Every time I wear the Chelsea shirt, I give my all."
