According to Milan News, the new San Siro stadium project has a schedule, and Milan and Internazionale are to deliver the new stadium before the 2032 European Championship.

New San Siro, the 2032 European Championship as a deadline

Anyone following the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham will understand the meaning of "pacemaker" in long-distance running: someone sprints ahead to set the pace, making the race faster and less tactical. The new San Siro stadium and the 2032 European Championship in Italy are now in a similar relationship. The European Championship is the pacemaker, and the new stadiums planned by Milan and Internazionale must set records in the race. The reason is simple. For Milan to be eligible to host the European Championship in six years, there must first be a new stadium: the existing San Siro does not meet UEFA requirements at all.

However, for the new stadium to enter UEFA's selection list, there are two other critical deadlines: a complete proposal must be submitted before October 1st this year, as this is the deadline for the Italian Football Federation to submit the 5 host cities and stadiums to UEFA; additionally, the stadium must be delivered one year before the start of the event to complete all checks 12 months before the match. Driven by the European Championship, Milan and Internazionale hope to push their projects forward smoothly, without any errors, and complete delivery in approximately five years, i.e., before June 2031.

New stadium: timetable. So, what are the next milestones for the stadium? First, it must be clear that Milan and Internazionale are facing a very tight timetable with almost no room for error. The first step is still the aforementioned October 1st, when the Italian Football Federation will announce the final list of 5 host cities, plus some alternate cities. By the end of this year, the site remediation work must be completed, and the Technical and Economic Feasibility Study (PFTE) will also be submitted. Between spring and summer 2027, the responsible department is expected to approve the project execution plan. Only then can construction begin between 2027 and 2028: from that moment on, the teams still have until June 2031 to complete delivery. This is truly a race against time and against bureaucratic obstacles.
