Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville believes Wirtz has the ability to succeed in the Premier League, but he was disappointed by Wirtz's substitution in the 60th minute of Sunday's match.

Neville said on his podcast: "He needs to sort himself out. Enough is enough, we've talked about him too much. He's young, and he's come to a different country – I'm certainly willing to support him."

"I can see he's a good player, but I can't keep watching performances like that. When the team needs goals, he gets substituted after an hour, and they were 2-1 down at the time, so that's not right."

"Especially with Wirtz, I don't see that fight. What I see is a decent player running around on the pitch, but he never seems to truly push himself to get anything done."

"I want to give him a good shake, because he has the ability, the talent, and he understands his position."

"I just feel that Wirtz needs to seriously consider being less involved in creative play and seeing himself more as a second striker, rather than a third midfielder, while also thinking clearly about what kind of performance he should be delivering."

Striker Isak also did not escape criticism. The Sweden international failed to make an impact in the game after returning to St. James' Park.

He added: "The biggest problem for Liverpool is that they have a strike partnership worth a combined £250 million, namely Isak and Wirtz. To be honest, we've been lenient enough with the performances of these two."

"They have to start performing sooner or later, otherwise, to be fair, they will receive a lot of criticism. I think they have to start delivering results."

"Both of them have received some extra leniency. Obviously, Isak was injured last season, but if Arne Slot loses his job because of this, and Wirtz continues to play this way, then I must say, it's starting to make me seriously consider this issue."
