Premier League champions Arsenal are conducting a cost review after bringing in a management consultancy firm following one of the best seasons in their history

Arsenal have brought in outside consultants to examine the club's internal operations and identify areas for improvement. The move comes months after they won their first Premier League title in 22 years and reached just the second Champions League final in club history.

They have also won their first three matches of this season, only trailing league leaders Manchester City by goals scored. The Gunners, though, are seemingly unwilling to stand still and rest on their laurels off the pitch.

Sky News has reported that Arsenal have enlisted management consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to scrutinise their balance sheets as part of a wide-ranging cost review.

Their chief executive, Richard Garlick, is understood to be taking a central role in the assessment of the club, which employs around 800 members of staff.

The process is said to be ongoing, meaning no firm decisions have yet been reached - though the review is reported to concentrate on the 'non-footballing aspects' of the club.

That being said, a financial review does not necessarily signal impending redundancies. A review last season also saw the overhaul of their medical department. Reach PLC approached Arsenal, but the club declined to comment on the matter.

Arsenal splashed out significantly in the transfer market, yet ranked only ninth among the Premier League's biggest net-spenders. The marquee arrivals were Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa.

North London also witnessed record-breaking sales, with Gabriel Martinelli becoming the club's most expensive departure when he sealed a move to Al-Hilal for £60m. Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard were also offloaded to Barcelona and Besiktas, respectively, fetching a combined £28.1m.

Arsenal's triumphant campaign last season generated approximately £300m for the club. This sum comprises prize money earned from clinching the title, reaching the Champions League final, the League Cup final and the FA Cup quarter-final.

In May, sources close to Arsenal informed our sister site, football.london, that the club's ownership, headed up by Stan Kroenke's son Josh, are determined to make the club financially self-sustaining while maintaining success on the pitch.

At the final home fixture of the season, Josh Kroenke penned a letter to supporters, stating: "The connection we feel with our supporters fills us with pride. Between us, we are building something very special and, wherever this month of May takes us, there will be no standing still when the season ends.

"We are always forward in our approach, taking the learnings as we go and relentless in the pursuit of progress. We remain focused on raising the standard, creating the best possible environment for our players and people to succeed, and elevating the unity that exists between club and community."

Arsenal's blistering start to the new campaign hints that further glory could be on the horizon. The Gunners boast a perfect winning record across all competitions so far, having thrashed Manchester City 3-0 to claim the Community Shield, edged past Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, and secured a 1-0 away triumph over Napoli in the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta's side head north to take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, before kicking off their League Cup campaign with an away fixture against Ipswich Town next Tuesday.
