Michael Owen has praised the performance of Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin during Leeds United's 4-1 victory over Newcastle and expressed surprise that Manchester United didn't move to sign the striker earlier.

On Monday night, Leeds United secured a commanding 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Elland Road, with Calvert-Lewin also getting on the scoresheet. He received a rousing ovation from the home supporters when he was substituted off.

Carragher described Calvert-Lewin's display that evening as "unstoppable". He made Newcastle's defence work hard and once again demonstrated his quality. Meanwhile, with Thomas Tuchel set to announce his latest England squad this week, Calvert-Lewin is also expected to be in the spotlight.

The former Everton star's career has been hindered by injuries, but he once again proved against Newcastle that he can perform brilliantly when fit.

The 29-year-old Calvert-Lewin joined Leeds United last summer and has enjoyed an injury-free season under Farke, scoring 15 goals across all competitions.

Owen told Premier League Productions: "He's always been plagued by injuries, but when he's fit, he's a difficult player to deal with.

"Given that many clubs have lacked a proper centre-forward in recent years, I think, with all due respect, even some of the big clubs outside Leeds could take a punt and sign him as backup. Manchester United could have too.

"One or two clubs showed interest in him, but Leeds demonstrated their commitment and put real money down to sign him, and he's repaid them.

"They must have done some things to keep him in good condition and prevent injuries, and now he can play in virtually every match. He's never been able to do that before. He's had a few turbulent years, but now he's in a completely different place. He's performing and looking very impressive."

Manchester United signed Sesko for £74 million last summer, but when he's sidelined or injured, Carrick deploys Mbeumo or Cunha in attack.

In an earlier interview, Owen said: "Manchester United have various attacking options, which is good for them. I think Sesko still needs to develop further to truly fulfil his potential. Manchester United clearly want to be England's strongest team again and win the Premier League once more. To do that, I believe they need a world-class striker.

"Is Sesko one of the top 10 strikers in the world? No, I don't think so."
