Former Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has seen his first season at 1860 Munich end in catastrophe.

The German side slumped to defeat in their two-leg play-off against Jahn Regensburg to confirm relegation to the third tier of German football. 

There were ugly scenes at Allianz Arena as fans attempted to bring a halt to the embarrassment and storm the pitch, forcing security to intervene.  

With the score at 3-1 on aggregate, the frustration boiled over from the stands as supporters attempted to force through the barriers onto the field of play.

Play was temporarily suspended to deal with the unrest before 1860 Munich's fate was confirmed. 

Reports in Germany claim that Ayre has stepped down from his position at the club following the defeat.

1869 Munich finished the season third from bottom and faced a must-win game against Jahn Regensburg to retain their place.

After a 1-1 draw in Regensburg, they lost 2-0 at the Allianz Arena to condemn them to relegation to the third tier for the first time since 1991.

Former Liverpool stalwart Dietmar Hamann tweeted that his 'heart is bleeding' for club he grew up with such admiration for. 

And one German pundit even went as far as to claim 1860 Munich are the 'worst run club ever'. 

Ayre held a number of positions at Anfield in his decade with the club including commercial director and managing director before becoming chief executive.  

When he announced he was joining the club back in February he was bullish in his optimism, saying his new side 'belong' in the Bundesliga, but 1860 now face a long road back to the top table of German football.
