On Monday, local time, Valdano gave an interview to the Portuguese newspaper "A Bola", discussing the topic of Real Madrid re-signing Mourinho after two consecutive seasons without a title.

Valdano and Mourinho were not close friends. In 2010, when Mourinho began his first tenure as Real Madrid coach, Valdano was the club's sporting director, and they could have become friends. However, friction between two positions with significant responsibilities eventually ruined the relationship—Valdano left his post, while Mourinho continued to coach for two more years.

When asked, "Can Mourinho lead Real Madrid to win the Champions League this time?" Valdano said: "It's been almost 15 years. Football is different now, the social environment is different, Florentino is different, and Mourinho certainly isn't the same Mourinho he was back then. So, let's see what happens in the end."

When discussing what kind of coach Real Madrid needs after Xabi Alonso's departure, Valdano did not explicitly support any particular type of coach.

Valdano said: "Florentino chose another type of coach. In fact, there are not many suitable options for Real Madrid at the moment, and the available candidates are decreasing. I don't know what the point is for Mourinho to take on this responsibility again; only the club itself knows."

Finally, Valdano briefly recalled his experience working with Mourinho and stated that the past conflicts between them have now been forgotten.

Valdano said: "I am the least resentful person in the world; conflicts don't last long with me, and I easily move on."
