According to France Football, Benatia acknowledged making mistakes during his tenure as Olympique Marseille's sporting director.

Benatia reflected on his time at Olympique Marseille, noting that players often determine match outcomes while coaches frequently shoulder the blame in press conferences.

"Today, players decide everything. Many times, coaches can't say much at press conferences, so they say, 'It's all my fault.' Even when no one wins the duel, they still say it's their fault. I can accept it once or twice, three times, but there's a limit. We're talking about players earning 2 to 3 million euros a year. But once they lose, you can't say anything to them," said the 39-year-old former Morocco international.

The former Bayern Munich and Juventus player added: "When dissatisfied fans want to see them, they can't show up. Football is for those who love it and are obsessed with it. You have to be 100% committed—even 200%—at least at Olympique Marseille, you can't just be half-committed. For the players we signed, Roberto and I would tell them: 'We will be here.' But the condition was that they had to give their heart and soul. Some gave nothing. If you ask me if I made mistakes? Yes, with two players we misjudged. I won't name names; that would be disrespectful."
