Bolton player Harvey Simons was sent off for punching an opponent, according to the Daily Mail.

Simons, 23, spent five years in the Brentford youth academy before making one appearance for Chelsea's first team in the 2021-22 season.

Since then, he has played for Hull City and Bolton, but had a poor start to Saturday's League Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday.

Early in the second half with the score still 0-0, Simons was pulled back by Harry Gray, brother of Tottenham Hotspur player Archie Gray, as he attempted to push forward.

Simons then swung a punch, hitting Gray in the stomach.

Gray fell to the ground, and Simons' action sparked a confrontation between the two teams. Referee Elliot Bell showed the midfielder a red card.

Harvey Simons was sent off for striking 17-year-old Harry Gray in the stomach. Simons' red card proved costly as Sheffield Wednesday won 1-0 with a goal from Jamal Lowe in the 70th minute.

After the match, Bolton manager Steven Schumacher criticized the player but did not publicly condemn him harshly.

He said: "From my angle, it looked like Simons reacted and threw a punch, and he knows he can't do that."

"It was a poor decision and not one you'd expect from him. It's the first time I've seen him do that since he's been here, and I'm sure he'll be disappointed with himself."

Simons was also loaned to Fleetwood and Wycombe before joining Bolton from Hull City before the start of last season.

Since then, he has played a key role in Bolton's promotion push. The team beat Stockport in the play-off final to earn promotion to the Championship, returning to the second tier after a five-year absence.
