According to German sports channel ARD, Alexander Wehrle, chairman of the German Football Association's supervisory board, has called for Gianni Infantino's resignation.

Wehrle stated in a podcast that Infantino should "resign outright." He added that this was merely his "personal wish," but "I know Infantino wouldn't care at all."

Wehrle believes that Infantino's previous plan, later abandoned, to sell shares in FIFA competitions to private investors, has "completely split" the football world. He said that at the FIFA Congress in March 2027, "democratic elections" must replace "acclamatory elections."

He hopes that "responsible candidates" will emerge with "reasonable election programs that serve the interests of global football," bringing FIFA back to its core responsibilities. Prior to this, the Stuttgart CEO wants continental football federations to engage in dialogue about their respective needs and goals. Wehrle said: "Solutions must be provided." He also mentioned the issue of FIFA presidential candidates, emphasizing that it should not be "buying national support with money," but rather "bringing sustainable plans and development for the benefit of global football."

Wehrle finds it difficult to imagine Infantino continuing as FIFA president. He stated on German radio that this is already a "systemic problem": "As long as Infantino is president, things will not change. Therefore, we first need a fundamental discussion, and then we also need a different style of leadership." Wehrle stated that although Infantino has temporarily shelved the investor plan, he has not ruled out the possibility of re-promoting it in the future: "So he must first provide answers."
