According to Japanese media citing various sources, the reasons why negotiations for Zion Suzuki's move to Paris Saint-Germain broke down have been revealed.

Japan national team goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was initially expected to join Paris Saint-Germain, but the transfer fell through at the last minute. On August 15, local time, several French media outlets, including sports radio station RMC Sport, reported that the deal for Suzuki to Paris Saint-Germain had collapsed, with negotiations, which had reached the final signing stage, breaking down at the eleventh hour.

This could have been a landmark signing for Japanese football. According to RMC Sport, Paris Saint-Germain had planned to complete Suzuki's medical examination this weekend and send a private plane to Italy after obtaining special permission, to pick up Suzuki and related personnel. The two clubs had also been advancing the confirmation of relevant documents. However, just before the signing, demands made by Suzuki's side put everything on hold.

According to the radio station, Suzuki's agent or intermediary demanded a €5 million commission in the contract. Additionally, they proposed that Suzuki be guaranteed the starting goalkeeper position from the second season onwards, and if loaned out, he could only be loaned to clubs participating in the Champions League. The Paris Saint-Germain management, in particular, showed strong dissatisfaction with the commission request and immediately suspended negotiations, causing the deal to fall through at the last hurdle.

However, the dissatisfaction of the Paris Saint-Germain management with Suzuki's demands may not be surprising. French journalist Loïc Tanzi explained that in France, the commission paid to agents is capped at 10% of the player's salary, and €5 million exceeds this limit. He stated: "It's not uncommon for agents or intermediaries to be paid in such deals, but Paris Saint-Germain rejected this in negotiations with Suzuki because the amount itself is illegal."

From an objective perspective, Suzuki's demands were also considered "excessive." The Italian major newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which has long reported on various transfer news, wrote: "Everything seemed to be settled, with agreement not only between the clubs but also on the player's annual salary. But due to the excessive demands of the agent or intermediary, these negotiations, just one step away from reaching an agreement, ultimately ended."

However, after failing to sign with Paris Saint-Germain, the battle for Suzuki will intensify again. As several media outlets previously reported, Premier League team Aston Villa has submitted a formal offer, with a transfer fee of €30 million and an additional €5 million in variable bonuses. Furthermore, it is reported that Juventus, the Italian giant that reportedly pushed for loan negotiations between Paris Saint-Germain and Suzuki, is also exploring the possibility of bringing him in.

Gazzetta dello Sport, reporting on this situation, noted: "Aston Villa may be able to present a more convincing proposal to those around the Japanese goalkeeper. Juventus's management hopes to finalize a new goalkeeper in the next 48 hours, with Aston Villa's goalkeeper Martinez being their top target. However, currently, Aston Villa's involvement in the pursuit of Suzuki has become a decisive factor in determining Juventus's direction."

Zion Suzuki is experiencing a turbulent few days, and for this young goalkeeper eager to advance further, it remains to be seen which club will ultimately be his new home.
