In the opening round of the new Premier League season, Liverpool drew 2-2 with Newcastle away from home. After the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot spoke to beIN Sports.

Arne, for both teams, this match is always special. Everyone comes into it with high expectations and considerable apprehension. From a personal perspective, how do you view this match and how do you think your team performed?

Well, it's certainly not the result we wanted before the match. But given that we were behind for most of the game, earning a point is still positive. I think we certainly created better chances today—we absolutely shouldn't have lost this match. It's a strange feeling because although we only have one point, we're also pleased that after such tremendous effort from the players, I think we deserved that goal in the final moments.

From a defensive perspective, what do you make of the two goals conceded?

I think they were two clear transition errors. There's no secret that Newcastle has one of the fastest attacks in the league. They attack the spaces and are extremely dangerous on the counterattack. I think the two goals were different. For the first goal, we had an excellent shooting opportunity—I think we should have shot straight away since we were on the edge of their box with solid possession, but we didn't handle it well, and then they punished us. Elanga's movement was also really excellent. For the second goal, I think we had enough defenders, and we could have handled that situation much better. Perhaps we should have cut off that attack earlier.

It's still early in the season, but how far is the team from where you want them to be?

I think today I saw many things I liked from the team. I think we consistently created threats against the opposition. We put great pressure on Newcastle and scored in the second half. Perhaps we didn't make the most of our chances, but I still see many encouraging aspects. However, clearly when you concede two goals like that, it's very difficult to win the match.

One final question: it takes great courage to take a penalty in the final minute like Dominik Szoboszlai did. Will he be the team's designated penalty taker? What did you think of his penalty?

Well, clearly we were all nervous at that moment, but it was an excellent penalty—right into the top corner with high velocity. I think the ball was almost unstoppable, and that's exactly what happened.

So will he be the designated penalty taker this season?

It looks that way, it looks that way. But not just one person—I'm also very confident in their decision-making. We have several excellent penalty takers, so sometimes it depends on them to decide. If Dom Szoboszlai doesn't feel he's in the best state at that moment, I think we have other excellent penalty takers.
