Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard still doesn't understand why the club sold Neco Williams in the summer of 2022. While working as a TNT Sports commentator for Liverpool's match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, he praised the former Reds player's development highly and stated directly that Liverpool should have kept him.

Gerrard said that Williams' professionalism and match performance have always been consistent: "He is exactly the same in training as he is in games. He comes to the training ground every day and does everything very well. He has extremely high professionalism and is a true winner. He is tough, ambitious, and very competitive. As for his talent, we have known it for a long time."

Gerrard coached the Liverpool academy from 2017 to 2018, so he is very familiar with Williams. In his opinion, if talent is combined with professionalism, Williams is fully capable of establishing himself in the Premier League for the long term.

"In my opinion, he is an excellent full-back. I'm not saying this lightly—I even want to apologize to Nottingham Forest fans: in my opinion, Liverpool should have kept him."

Williams came through the Liverpool academy and made his first-team debut under Klopp in 2020. However, due to fierce competition within the team, he never managed to become a regular starter. In January 2022, he was loaned to Fulham before officially transferring to Nottingham Forest. According to statistics, he made only 33 first-team appearances for Liverpool.

After joining Forest, Williams received more consistent playing time and gradually became an important player for the team. Now 25 years old, his contract with Forest runs until 2029, and there have been recent transfer rumours linking him with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Williams himself has not been distracted by the transfer speculation. "I'm just focused on where I am now, and that's Forest. I can't do any more than that," he said in an interview with TNT Sports.
