Mason Greenwood is under investigation following the chaotic and ugly scenes that followed Fenerbahce's Champions League victory over Lyon last month.

Fenerbahce have confirmed that UEFA are investigating Mason Greenwood for his role in the chaotic and ugly scenes that followed his side’s Champions League qualifying play-off against Lyon. The encounter in France, which Greenwood’s side won 2-1, was marred by ugly scenes following the full-time final whistle.

Greenwood’s team-mate, Matteo Guendouzi, who played for Lyon's arch-rivals Marseille between 2021 and 2024, provoked Lyon fans as he slowly made his way off the pitch after his side’s victory at Groupama Stadium.

Clashes then broke out on the pitch and in the tunnel as players and staff from both sides got involved. A figure in what appears to be a Lyon tracksuit then emerged from the tunnel and seemed to try to aim a flying kick at Guendouzi.

Former Manchester United man Greenwood was also caught up in the ugly scenes, and Fenerbahce have now confirmed that the pair are under investigation from UEFA.

A statement from the Super Lig club confirmed: "Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second leg match, UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against our players Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as against our club.

"Our club will present the necessary defenses before the relevant UEFA bodies in order to protect the rights and interests of our players and Fenerbahçe during this process.

"The necessary information, documents, and defenses regarding the process will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We inform the public accordingly."

Speaking after the game, Guendouzi claimed he had been 'disrespected' by home supporters. He said: "You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children, even before the match - and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet.

"Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes - even longer if you count the warm-up - they were insulting my family.

“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful."

Ismail Kartal, the Fenerbahce head coach, also spoke about the scenes and said: “As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about.”

Greenwood joined Fenerbahce from Marseille on a four-year deal back in July. The 24-year-old has made the switch to Turkey for a fee of £33.25m, which will be paid in three instalments over three years.

Greenwood scored 48 times in 81 appearances for OM, having made the switch from Manchester United in July 2024, and was the second-highest scorer in Ligue 1 last term behind Rennes’ Esteban Lepaul. After booking their place in the group stage of this season’s Champions League, Fenerbahce will host Liverpool and face Atletico Madrid away, as well taking on Aston Villa (away), Roma (home), Shakhtar Donetsk (away), Villarreal (home), Slavia Prague (home) and LASK (away).
