Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Atlético Madrid on Wednesday night, with goals from Szoboszlai and Mac Allister, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Szoboszlai believes a near-telepathic understanding is developing between him and Mac Allister. The duo have become Liverpool's preferred midfield pairing under new manager Arne Slot at the start of the season.

Both Szoboszlai and Mac Allister scored as Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night to kick off their Champions League campaign.

It was their third successive start together in deeper midfield roles for Liverpool this season. Mac Allister was on the bench for the opening day trip to Newcastle United, with Ryan Gravenberch starting instead.

The pair have often featured together in midfield over the past three years, but usually with Szoboszlai playing further forward or as part of a sole deeper-playing midfielder during Jürgen Klopp's tenure.

Szoboszlai believes this experience has also helped them both adapt quicker to the demands of their key roles in Slot's system.

"I've said it many times, I really like playing with Macca. We know each other without speaking. You look at him and he knows what you want to do, and I fully know what he wants to do – and I think that helps the team too," said Szoboszlai.

He continued: "Who plays the next few games is up to the manager. I think everyone is ready to compete with each other, but we have to be a family. Can we be a successful partnership for a long time? Yes, we can."

Gravenberch was a regular starter for two seasons under former coach Arne Slot. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, however, combined for more appearances last season.

Szoboszlai added: "In the end, it's the coach's decision who plays, it's not up to us. I like playing with Gravenberch, and I like playing with Wirtz, Wataru Endo, and Noni too."

"I like playing with everyone, and they probably like playing with each other and with me too – hopefully. In the end, we need everyone because the season is long and we're competing in all competitions, and we want to stay in all competitions until the end."

New £123m signing Luis Díaz made his home debut and first start for Liverpool following his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. Szoboszlai believes adding a player who has won the Champions League twice is an important addition to the squad.

"Of course, he's a great player, he's proven that in Paris. We need everyone with that quality. He was a bit tired, which is normal because he had to defend and give everything we needed. I think he'll be ready for the next game too," Szoboszlai said.

"Araújo was playing at right-back, which isn't his position; Díaz came on as a right winger, and he usually prefers to play from the left, but that's precisely why we have to adapt to each other. We have to learn these things and then move forward."

Speaking about the progress under Slot, Szoboszlai stated: "I think it's going well. We know what he wants, and he's also figuring out which players he needs to achieve that."

Liverpool's victory extended their unbeaten start under new manager Slot, and it was only the third time the Reds have come from behind to win since lifting the Premier League title almost 18 months ago.

"After going behind, it's not easy to turn the game around. As we saw last season, after losing a game, we hardly created any chances," said Szoboszlai.

"But this time we reacted well, didn't panic too much, maintained the same system, and continued to play in the same way. In the end, you always get chances because of the players' quality, and we know each other and know what to do. I think that's the most important thing."

"This win is a good boost for us. We're not looking at the next three games; we're first focusing on the Premier League match at home against Fulham on Saturday. We're only focused on ourselves, not on what others think of us."

Szoboszlai signed a new long-term contract this summer and has taken on more responsibility this season. Slot appointed him as one of three vice-captains, alongside Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez, following Andy Robertson's departure.

"That feels great, it's a proud moment for me. Although we have three vice-captains, there haven't been many vice-captains in Liverpool's history, so I accept that and I accept the responsibility," Szoboszlai said.

"I will try to show it every time on the pitch and off the pitch too, and try to be more of a leader building on last season. That's my plan for the next few years."
