Marc Skinner has left his role as Manchester United head coach by mutual agreement.

United's season is due to begin in just over a month on September 4 against London City Lionesses, but Skinner will not be in the dugout.

He was in charge for five years and broke new ground at the club, leading them to their first major trophy in 2024 when they lifted the Women's FA Cup.

Skinner also led them to the Champions League group stage for the first time last year – having finished second in the Women's Super League in 2024-25 – with United also finishing as the runners-up in three domestic cup finals during his time in charge.

The 43-year-old's contract had been due to run until at least 2027, having signed a two-year extension with a one-year option last summer.

However, reports suggest he was frustrated by a quiet transfer window, with United now targeting younger players in the hope of building for the future.

"Marc leaves having made a significant contribution to the continued progress of Manchester United Women," the club said in their statement.

"The club places on record its sincere thanks for his professionalism, commitment and dedication throughout his time at United, and wishes him every success in the future."

United reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, but finished fourth in the WSL, nine points behind Chelsea in third, and 15 back from champions Manchester City.

So far, they have brought in two signings, defender Andrea Medina and goalkeeper Janina Leitzig, while Melvine Malard departed for Chelsea.

United are reportedly advanced in their search for Skinner's replacement.
