Puyol is a legendary figure in Barcelona's history and one of the foremost representatives of the club's spirit. As a former captain, he earned the respect of fans through his tenacious fighting spirit, exceptional leadership, and unwavering loyalty to the Barcelona jersey. Recently, Puyol reflected on his personal growth and his journey with Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Born in La Pobla de Segur, a small Catalan town, Puyol played football on the streets from a young age but did not officially join a team until he was 15. "I came from a very small village and played football on the streets every day, but I didn't join a team until I was 15."
Despite growing up far from the spotlight of professional football, Puyol dreamed from an early age of wearing the Barcelona jersey. However, he admitted that he never believed this dream could become a reality until he actually joined the first team.
"At that time, I could dream of joining Barcelona, but I never thought it could actually happen until I joined the first team. To be honest, even in my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined such a career."
Puyol's football journey was not driven by family pressure. He said his father always supported his choices but was not interested in football. "My father supported me and let me choose freely what I wanted to do. It's just that he didn't like football."
In Puyol's view, this upbringing greatly benefited him. "I never had the extra pressure of becoming a professional player, and I think that helped me too."
Eventually, the boy who played football on the streets of his hometown joined Barcelona’s first team and became the club captain and a legend. Puyol said that Barcelona had always been the most special team in his heart, so even though he received invitations from other clubs during his career, he never seriously considered leaving.
"First, Barcelona is the team in my heart. I worked hard to get into the first team, and then everything fell into place naturally, even though I received offers from many teams. If someone at home likes and recognizes you, where else can you find a better place? Since everything was like that, I never thought about leaving."
In addition to Barcelona, Puyol's Spanish national team career was also filled with glory. However, he believes that whether at club or international level, success does not come overnight, and building a united team is crucial.
"Whether at Barcelona or with the national team, the beginning was not easy. We did not achieve our goals initially, but we gradually built a team and formed a united collective. In the national team, Luis Aragonés played a particularly key role."
