Messi has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, bringing his 21-year international career to an end. Having made his debut for Argentina’s Under-20s in 2004, Messi has represented Argentina at international level for 22 years.

Messi has won six titles for Argentina: the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the men’s football gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima Trophy, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2024 Copa América.

In major tournaments, Messi was named MVP of the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and won the Golden Ball at the 2015 Copa América, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup; he is the only player to have won the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball twice.

Messi has made 207 appearances for the Argentina senior national team, scoring 125 goals and providing 68 assists, helping Argentina to one World Cup title and two World Cup runners-up finishes.
