According to SPORT1, Bayern Munich sporting director Christof Freund is set to extend his contract with the club.

Max Eberl's career prospects have been the subject of internal discussions at Bayern for several months. The sporting director has had to continuously prove himself, only securing a new contract through 2029 last week. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has had a much smoother time, with his future never truly becoming a point of contention.

Like Dreesen, Freund has rarely generated controversy. This is an advantage for Freund over Eberl, though he too has faced questions about some of his decisions.

In the winter 2023/24 transfer window, Freund led the acquisitions of Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza. Neither transfer has lived up to expectations so far. Zaragoza has been loaned to Espanyol, and Bayern is still seeking a solution for Boey.

So why does Freund escape criticism while Eberl has had to explain and defend nearly every decision for months?

SPORT1's lead reporter Stefan Kumberger said in the latest episode of the "Bayern Weekly" podcast: "This is because he's a team player with a calm demeanor. He doesn't actively seek public attention, and he is not seen as trying to undermine or replace anyone." This approach has clearly been warmly received at Bayern.

At the end of last season, Kicker reported tensions between Freund and Eberl, but both sides vehemently denied this. Currently, claims about strained relations are no longer being made.

Freund maintains a good relationship with CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. Kumberger stated: "Freund benefits from his good relationship with the CEO. They work closely together. Dreesen is responsible for Bayern's finances and must assess whether the sporting department's spending requests are reasonable. A good relationship is certainly not a bad thing."

At Bayern, sporting decisions can never be completely separated from internal power dynamics. Clearly, the advantages that this relationship brings matter more than two transfers that Freund, thus far, has struggled to turn into successes.
