ESPN pundit Kenneth Perez has mixed feelings about Stengs. While he frequently praises the 27-year-old Ajax player's abilities, he is frustrated by Stengs' inconsistent performances during matches.

"I have a love-hate relationship with Stengs because I think he's genuinely brilliant to watch," Perez said on Dit was het Weekend. "Sometimes he does things that make you wonder how he thought of that. But he also does things that make you wonder how he could possibly do that."

Perez specifically highlighted a crucial missed opportunity by Stengs in the match against Willem II. In that game, Ajax was leading 1-0 when Stengs had the best chance to extend their lead, but his close-range shot went over the bar. Ajax ultimately surrendered their lead in the final minutes, and Willem II secured a valuable draw.

"He played far too casually with that chance. It was really poor," Perez noted. "If he had scored, it would be 2-0, and Willem II would have had to push forward and increase the pressure. At that point, you have more space and can completely decide the match."

Perez believes Stengs has accomplished many valuable things for Ajax. "He does a lot of good things, truly. He looks up and shows team spirit, but in moments like that, he needs to be clinical. That's when the match is decided."

Perez is convinced that players like Stengs should be playing for higher-level clubs. "Injuries have certainly slowed him down, but a player with his quality shouldn't be at Ajax at 26 or 27 years old. A player of his caliber really shouldn't be in the Eredivisie right now."

Meanwhile, Marciano Vink identified an interesting problem in Ajax's midfield. With Clasie returning and the currently injured Smidt also set to return, coach Echteld faces difficult selection decisions. Vink believes Dave Kwakman deserves a place in the squad, as he thinks these circumstances will create challenges.

"You don't play Clasie at number 10, and Koopmeiners isn't number 10 either, so who is it?" Vink asked. "You can play Stengs there, but one of these three will end up on the bench. Eventually, when Smidt returns, it could be Kwakman's turn to be affected, and I think that's a real shame. This youngster proved in the first three or four matches that he deserves to be part of this team."
