According to Bild, Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder has a budget of 4 million euros to find a new coach, and the club is willing to pay a termination fee if necessary.

Sparta Prague coach Brian Priske is among the candidates. Danish media outlet Tipsbladet reported that Priske ranks highly on Borussia Mönchengladbach's shortlist. However, both Sky Germany and Rheinische Post have stated that these rumours lack substance, and Priske may not be a priority target for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
In addition to Priske, Bild reports that Alexander Blessin, Horst Steffen, Christian Eichner, and Steffen Baumgart are also on Borussia Mönchengladbach's shortlist. The evaluation is not conducted by Schröder alone; former sporting director Roland Virkus is also involved. Virkus has been responsible for scouting coaching candidates in the recruitment department since July. Baumgart's appointment could present some internal sensitivities.
Before his time at Union Berlin and Hamburg, Baumgart coached at FC Köln, Borussia Mönchengladbach's arch-rivals. In his first season with FC Köln, he led the team to seventh place and qualified for the Europa Conference League. In December 2023, Baumgart departed FC Köln following a decline in the team's performance after 98 matches in charge.
Despite his history with FC Köln, Baumgart meets Borussia Mönchengladbach's requirements for a new manager: experienced and capable of handling adversity. The club's decision-makers also value his prior knowledge of the team, eliminating the need to study extensive video footage. After just three matches, Borussia Mönchengladbach's situation is already critical.
Borussia Mönchengladbach has lost all three opening matches with zero points and a goal difference of 3-12, currently 17th in the Bundesliga. Only Hamburg have performed worse, with a goal difference of 0-12 and no goals scored. Last weekend, Borussia Mönchengladbach suffered a 0-5 defeat away to Freiburg, a crushing loss that sealed head coach Gerardo Seoane's fate.
The 40-year-old took over the team temporarily last season after Gerardo Seoane was sacked. Following his permanent appointment, Polanski averaged 1.10 points per game across 29 matches and faced scrutiny even before the new season began.
