UEFA have handed the 2029 Champions League final to the Nou Camp, overlooking Wembley in the process, as Barcelona's iconic stadium ends a 30-year wait for the event

Wembley has missed out on hosting the Champions League final in 2029 with the Nou Camp instead getting the nod for the first time in 30 years.

Wembley, since it was re-opened in 2007, has hosted the European Cup final on three occasions, most recently in 2024. It was seeking to land the marquee event once more but has missed out with Barcelona's revamped stadium picked for the final in three years time.

The Nou Camp is the midst of a facelift and that has seen it picked by UEFA's Executive Committee to host the final, seeing off competition from Wembley and Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion, which has never hosted the event.

Heading back to Barcelona's iconic stadium will evoke memories of the historic 1999 final, which Manchester United won with two goals in the final two minutes against Bayern Munich en route to winning the treble.

The Nou Camp was also the scene of the European Cup final in 1989, won by AC Milan. Barcelona president Joan Laporta said on the decision: "This is an immense source of pride for FC Barcelona and for all Barça supporters.

"This decision is also international recognition for the new Spotify Camp Nou, which is establishing itself as a world-class stadium at the forefront of fan experience, technology, connectivity, accessibility, and services."

Wembley has played a central role in European competitions across the past two decades. As well as the three Champions League finals is also held the final and semi-finals of Euro 2020, which was delayed by 12 months due to the pandemic. It will be the central point of the Euros in 2028, which will be played across the UK.

The other final awarded by UEFA's Executive Committee on Thursday was the 2028 edition, which will head to the Allianz Arena. Bayern Munich's stadium held the final only last year, when PSG hammered Inter Milan, but has been given the right to host it for a third time in 16 years.

It means that, since Wembley was re-open, only the London venue and Bayern's Allianz Arena have played host to three Champions League finals.

This season's showpiece event will be held at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. It will be the venues second final having been the scene of Liverpool's triumph over Tottenham in 2019.
