Football fans have been reacting to the news that the Dutch Eredivisie season will be voided due to coronavirus and the implications it could have for other European leagues.

The decision means Ajax will be denied the title while promotion and relegation has also been scrapped, meaning Alan Pardew's ADO Den Haag will avoid the drop.

His side were seven points from safety with eight games left to play but hadn't won a game since January.

Some fans have been failing Den Haag's survival as another 'masterclass' from the former Newcastle manager.

The 58-year-old has had a turbulent time in the Netherlands with his own supporters invading one of his training sessions due to the team's poor results.

But the manager has achieved the goal he was set when he took on the job in December - to keep the club in the top flight, with Twitter users praising the 'miracle worker' for completing another 'masterclass'.

Meanwhile, the outcome leaves means second-tier Cambuur will miss out on promotion, despite being 11 points clear of third-placed Volendam.

The club posted a picture of one of their stands with a banner that reads 'Win, lose or tie, Cambuur till I die' alongside a caption with a crying face emoji.

Fans have also been contemplating whether the Eredivisie's decision could be implemented in other European countries, most notably in England with the government lockdown not due to end until at least May 7, if it is not extended.

If the Premier League were to make the same move Liverpool would be denied the title despite being 25 points clear and West Brom and Leeds would miss out on promotion.

But teams threatened with relegation including Norwich, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Watford, West Ham, Brighton and Southampton would all be safe.

One Leeds fan wrote: 'This makes me feel sick. Cambuur - who top the second tier and hold an 11-point gap from the play offs - won't be promoted. Eredivisie cancelled null and void.'

Supporters of other clubs were less sympathetic with many quick to mock the Premier League and Championship leaders.

One wrote: 'Brace yourselves Liverpool fans...' while another said 'Do the Prem next so Liverpool don't win it.'

The Reds have not won the title for 30 years while Leeds are looking to get back into the top-flight for the first time since 2004.
