Liverpool must solve their set-piece failings if they are to avoid a difficult season in 2026-27, Dominik Szoboszlai admitted after Sunday's 4-2 friendly defeat to Leeds United.

The Reds seemed to be cruising to victory in the final game of their pre-season tour of the United States on Sunday, with Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz scoring in the first half.

But the Leeds fans present in Chicago were treated to a second-half fightback, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin netting twice and being joined on the scoresheet by Brenden Aaronson and Sean Longstaff.

Both of Calvert-Lewin's goals came via long throws from Ethan Ampadu, with Liverpool's backline being beaten to flick-ons at the near post.

Leeds finished Sunday's game with 15 shots and 2.2 xG, compared to Liverpool's figures of nine shots and 1.1 xG. 

And a remarkable 1.6 of Leeds' xG tally came from set-pieces, with Andoni Iraola's team struggling with their physical approach.

Last season, the Reds' former boss Arne Slot was outspoken regarding their failings from set-pieces on several occasions – Liverpool conceded 20 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League in 2025-26, the most of any team in the division.

Speaking to LFC TV after Sunday's game, Szoboszlai said: "We should speak about it generally in two weeks, when we get to know each other more and more. 

"A couple of the guys came in later, a couple of the guys aren't even here. We learned a lot, and we'll just keep on going.

"You have to look at the positive side, even when it's negative. I know it wasn't the best game, but in the first half, we controlled the whole game. Losing 4-2, we just move on.

"Now we know we conceded two goals from set-pieces, and we have to take care of them more. 

"Last season was one where everything started to be really important from corners, long throws... We have to take care of it, or next season will be the same as last season.

"Set-pieces, everyone has to do their job, and we won't concede. We're also human beings; we are allowed to make mistakes. 

"We have to react; that's important. We have two games more before the season starts."

Having registered two victories and one defeat on their tour of the United States, Liverpool now return to Anfield to face Monaco and Como for their final two pre-season friendlies, before opening their 2026-27 campaign at Newcastle United on August 23.
