On talkSPORT, West Ham United legends Kevin Nolan and Tony Cottee shared their views on the club selling Potts.

Nolan said: "I think it could turn out to be a mistake, but it's also a good deal for Freddie Potts. Joining Brugge is a great move for Freddie, where he can play in European competitions and play the style of football he enjoys. To be honest, I was very surprised that this happened. I originally thought he might be one of the players to step up for West Ham United this year. It makes no sense to me, but I wish Freddie all the best because he's a great lad and comes from a good family. I'm sure he'll succeed there."

Another former Hammers striker, Tony Cottee, said: "I can't understand it. I don't know if it's because I'm a bit biased, but selling Freddie Potts really baffles me. I played with his father (Steve Potts), and I want to see more academy players get opportunities. I really can't understand why they sold him to Brugge for £10 million.

"Two seasons ago, he was named Portsmouth's Player of the Year while on loan in the Championship; before that, he was also named Wycombe's Player of the Year while on loan in League One. Yet now we are selling a good young academy player. It makes absolutely no sense to me. Of course, you could say that £10 million is important for the club, and they need the funds to operate.

"I understand the current situation, but in the long run, you have to keep good academy players. West Ham United might have already earned over £200 million before the season started. Given that, why sell an academy player for only £10 million? I really can't understand this point."
