According to Sport, Southampton manager Russell Martin has received death threats and abusive comments after being caught up in a scouting controversy.

After Southampton defeated Middlesbrough in the semi-finals and secured a place in the playoff final, the club was subsequently disqualified from the final itself for illegally filming Middlesbrough's training session. An intern analyst had recorded Middlesbrough's training on a mobile phone, prompting the independent disciplinary panel of the English Football League to impose the unprecedented penalty. Southampton appealed the decision but it was upheld.

Speaking to Kicker about the aftermath of last year's spying scandal, Martin confirmed that police investigations remain ongoing and he cannot discuss details. "I don't want to say too much about what happened, but I was advised not to drive and to sit in the back seat when travelling by car," he said, indirectly acknowledging he had received death threats.

Martin acknowledged that the decision to conduct the covert scouting was his own, as he was unaware the league rules prohibited it. "I approved it, so the responsibility is mine. It was a poor decision with severe consequences for the players, fans, and the club," the German coach said.

However, he also expressed gratitude for support from fellow coaches. "After Southampton was disqualified from the playoff final, I received many messages of support, even from coaches in England and the Bundesliga. That was a real comfort to me," he said.
