According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are accelerating their efforts to sign Spence and are nearing an agreement with Tottenham. Additionally, if Luis Enrique departs, Inter may further strengthen their options on the wing.

Inter has made its decision: English defender Porro is set to join from Tottenham. In recent hours, the two clubs have reached an agreement, with the deal expected to be finalized for approximately €30 million plus bonuses. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, he will become Inter's long-awaited replacement for Dumfries and fill the final gap in Inzaghi's squad. The club hopes to complete the transfer before the league begins. However, Spence may not be immediately available, as he, like his England teammate Stones, is only just returning to training following his post-World Cup break.
Why did Inter choose Spence?
Inter never abandoned its pursuit of Spence. Previously, the club had been waiting for two conditions to be met: first, for Tottenham to reduce their initial asking price of approximately €40 million, and second, for manager Postecoglou to approve the player's departure. In the meantime, Marotta and Ausilio reopened negotiations for French winger Diaby. However, the Diaby deal encountered multiple obstacles: the player's wage demands were substantial, and negotiations with Al-Ittihad proved difficult, as the Saudi club had also received interest from Bayer Leverkusen.
But Spence is not Inter’s “Plan B”—quite the opposite. From a tactical and physical standpoint, Spence is better suited to Inter’s requirements than Diaby, particularly given his superior defensive capabilities. In a 3-5-2 formation that relies on three center-backs, the defensive strength of the wing-backs is essential, and Spence can address defensive vulnerabilities more effectively than the alternatives, especially against top opponents. Furthermore, Spence offers greater positional flexibility. He excels on the right wing—his primary position, given his dominant foot—and also performs well on the left, where he showcased his abilities for England during the World Cup. His pace and positioning were evident in his crucial recovery tackle on Julián Álvarez during England’s World Cup semifinal against Argentina.
Spence Is Independent of Luis Enrique Deal
Regardless of Luis Enrique's future, Spence is a signing Inter is preparing to finalize. Roma is also preparing a significant offer for Luis Enrique, between €25 million and €30 million. This substantial sum warrants careful evaluation by Marotta and Ausilio. However, Luis Enrique does not particularly appeal to Gasperini. Inter intends to first assess the seriousness of Roma's interest before genuinely entering negotiations, especially given complications from last year's Kone deal. Clearly, selling another wing-back requires considering replacements in both quantity and quality. In short, signing only Spence would not suffice; he would be considered a rotational signing to strengthen depth at the position.
Spence Awaits Move to Milan
Spence is eagerly awaiting clearance to join Inter in Milan and is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Nerazzurri. He has already been in contact with Stones, having played alongside him for England at the recent World Cup. The English defensive pair may soon reunite at Appiano Gentile, where they will form Inter’s “Double S duo,” bringing a distinctly British flavor to the squad.
Romero Out; Pavard Likely to Stay
Regarding Cristian Romero, Inter has largely moved on. The Argentine centre-back is close to completing a move to Atlético Madrid.
Inter has decided to prioritize investment in wide players and potentially midfield reinforcements (Curtis Jones). At center-back, Pavard has expressed his desire to remain with Inzaghi and the club’s management, and he is proving his commitment through his performances. He was among the standout performers during Inter’s preseason tour and demonstrated a positive attitude in every training session. Pavard could prove to be an “unexpected asset” for the new campaign.
Unless a competitive offer emerges in the coming weeks, he will most likely remain at Inter.
