On a podcast, Man United legend Paul Scholes said that Chelsea's transfer market strategy this summer has swung from one extreme to another.

Chelsea are no longer extensively acquiring unproven young players from Europe and South America as they did in the past. Instead, they are focusing on signing players who have already proven themselves in the Premier League. The arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Lacroix reflect this new approach, and it is no coincidence that Alonso is coaching as a "head coach" rather than a "team coach."
After failing to sign Xhaka, Alonso was heavily involved in Chelsea's unexpected acquisitions of Welbeck and Henderson. Both are expected to take on leadership roles in the dressing room, especially after Thiago Silva's departure, providing a quality Chelsea has been lacking.
Last season, Chelsea received a record eight red cards and repeatedly conceded equalizers, or even lost, after taking the lead. However, Scholes questioned how much practical help two veterans could provide if they are not playing regularly.
He stated on "The Overlap Fan Debate": "These two older players make me feel like Chelsea have gone from one extreme to another, and I really don't understand it."
"You have a large group of 21-year-old players. Okay, bring in some 28- or 29-year-olds for experience, but now they're signing players who are around 37 or 38."
"If it were Xhaka, I could understand it. He's still an excellent player and performed very well at the World Cup.
"I think what Chelsea are hoping for most is the impact these two players can have on the training ground, because they can't play all the time, especially Henderson."
"Welbeck will still come on as a substitute, but that’s where his greatest value lies. If Chelsea has the money to spend this way, then that’s their business, isn’t it?"
Carragher also expressed similar views, saying he was particularly confused by Chelsea’s signing of his former Liverpool teammate, Henderson.
Carragher said of Chelsea signing Henderson and Welbeck: "I find it strange because I think the player signed from Crystal Palace (Lacroix) is a very good signing. You have a lot of young center-backs, and he's familiar with the Premier League after joining, and he's an experienced player."
“But you just talked about the team’s problems on the field—red cards and losing leads. So how much time will Henderson and Welbeck actually spend on the field?”
"I mean, if they were 28 or 29, in Tielemans' age group, I could understand it. I know they'll play a big role on the training ground, and if Chelsea starts well, we'll certainly hear many reports saying, 'Henderson and Welbeck are dressing-room leaders.'"
“They can help Chelsea improve their disciplinary issues and can also come on in the final 10 to 15 minutes of a game to help the team hold on to a lead. But what Chelsea really needs to address is their lack of on-field experience.”
"I can understand Henderson going to the World Cup. At the time, some said he wouldn’t get much playing time, but the World Cup lasts only six weeks, and a team has a 22-man squad, so someone will always get fewer opportunities. But a 10-month season is different; you’ll eventually need everyone."
"He can provide something for the team off the field, but when it comes to the on-field experience Chelsea truly need, I think the player Chelsea signed from Crystal Palace is more valuable than Henderson."
