Former German international and Chelsea defender Robert Huth appears to have lost hope in Wirtz. According to the ex-defender, the former Bayer Leverkusen prospect will struggle to establish himself at Liverpool and could depart soon.

Huth discussed Wirtz's development on the "In The Mixer" podcast. He said: "I really can't imagine how things could turn around."

Huth played for English clubs including Chelsea, Leicester City, and Stoke City. He believes Wirtz is "clearly a fantastic player," but "his physical presence is really an issue."

Huth pointed out that especially as an attacking midfielder, players sometimes need to "use their body to shield opponents" or actively commit fouls, but "I haven't seen any of that from him."

Will Wirtz Leave Liverpool After Christmas?

Last weekend, Wirtz was substituted off in the 63rd minute during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Newcastle. This was his first official match under new manager Iraola.

Huth was unimpressed with Wirtz's display: "His body language on the pitch was also poor."

His advice was that when a match isn't going well, you must play "aggressively" on the pitch and "trouble opponents for 90 minutes." But Wirtz has yet to demonstrate this intensity.

Huth also questioned whether Wirtz can turn things around: "If his performances don't improve, they might consider letting him leave around Christmas, because for Liverpool, he's become an expensive problem."

Wirtz Believes He Has Improved

Wirtz transferred from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool in June 2025 for an initial fee of approximately €117 million, potentially rising to around €136 million with add-ons.

In his first season at Liverpool, Wirtz has made 49 appearances, contributing 7 goals and 8 assists. However, especially in the Premier League, he has rarely performed to his full potential.

Wirtz recently faced scrutiny from Jamie Carragher. Previously, Wirtz stated in an interview that he takes his performances seriously while emphasizing that he has improved in "almost every aspect."
